Reading partners

Read all about it!
A new reading group has been formed in The Buick Memorial Primary School. ‘The Friends of Buick ‘, as it is now known, meets each Tuesday to spend the morning reading with the Primary Four year group. The reading partners have now completed their tenth week and the initiative has been hailed as a great success.
‘The Friends of Buick’ is made up of a dozen people from the local community who give of their time and expertise to enthuse and engage with the young readers. Every Primary Four child has benefited from this partnership. Quality time is spent with the children discussing their reading material, raising self-esteem and increasing confidence in key reading skills. The programme is based on the reciprocal reading model which has been introduced into the school recently.
The school has invested in almost 200 new titles to enhance reading resources for Key Stages 1 and 2. Everyone involved in the project agrees that the books display a wide variety of subject matter and stimulate interest and discussion.
Friends of Buick was formed after the success of another community initiative called ‘The Silver Surfers’ i-pad class. These groups have been very supportive of the school and The Buick plans to extend both schemes into the new year. Buick is truly at the heart of the community in Cullybackey.
