We have all settled into Primary 2 very well this year and have already enjoyed many activities together.

In Term 1 we made patterns using paint and all sorts of natural materials. After revising counting and forming numbers up to and beyond 20 we focused on the concept of addition. P2 have relished the opportunity to use Cuisenaire, Numicon and various other structured imagery and apparatus during the numeracy hour. We have also commenced learning to tell the time on the analogue clock.

During Literacy we have been developing both our handwriting and phonics skills. P2s enjoy constructing simple 3 sound words using practical picture word match games, magnetic letters, Interactive White Board word building games and tiles. As part of our Literacy focus and World Around Us topic P2 have also had the opportunity to develop independent writing by compiling lists and writing simple instructions. The children enjoyed several practical experiments and activities which included making fruit salad and washing hands to remove germs during our ‘Healthy Me’ topic. After completing each of the activities, we recorded ‘How to’ instructions.

In Primary 2 Play Based Learning offers the children the opportunity to create, experiment, imagine and explore in both the indoor and outdoor play settings in our school. Both settings offer areas in small world, dramatic play, water play, construction play, tabletop play, creative and malleable play. The children love learning in the play-based settings which are designed to reflect our different World Around Us topics each term.
