We have two Primary 1 classes and we can accept up to 60 pupils.

The children are encouraged to give of their best in a welcoming environment where their individuality is recognised and their talents developed. What better way to see what goes on in Primary 1 than with our wonderful pupils showing you what they have been learning this term?

NURSERY

Our Nursery children receive a warm welcome every morning. We have places for 26 children in a morning session. The Nursery Unit provides a stimulating and nurturing environment to introduce children to their learning journey. Let the amazing pupils from Nursery show you what they have been up to this term!

What parents and former pupils have to say.

Buick Memorial – a school at the heart of the village

Our school was named after the Rev. G.R. Buick, the minister of the Cuningham Memorial Church at the turn of the 20th century. He had been a donor for the construction of the school building. As a result, close links have been maintained with the Cuningham and the other churches in the village. Local clergy visit Buick on a monthly basis to lead assemblies. Each year the children study the Victorians and take the opportunity to visit this beautiful church erected in the late Victorian age. Our annual Christmas Carol Service is held in the church, welcoming children, parents and friends of the school.

Shared Education

In January 2018 Buick Memorial Primary School and Braidside Integrated Primary School began a Shared Education Partnership.

The purpose of Shared Education is to:

  1. Deliver educational benefits to children and young people
  2. Promote the efficient and effective use of resources
  3. Promote equality of opportunity
  4. Promote good relations
  5. Promote respect for identity, diversity and community cohesion.

Since beginning the programme our pupils and staff have enjoyed many wonderful learning opportunities some of which involved play-based learning activities, scientific investigations, fun with music and educational trips to the Zoo and Farm.  In June 2018 we held a special celebration event in both schools to share our experiences with parents and governors. We look forward to continuing this journey with our friends from Braidside.

The Ulster-Scots Agency

The Ulster-Scots Agency offered the opportunity to increase our awareness and deepen our understanding of our local culture in Cullybackey. Primary 6 researched the topic of emigration which took place from this area from the early 18th century.

It was very exciting for pupils to discover the strong ties between this part of County Antrim and the New World. The project included input from grannies and grandads who shared their experiences and helped to add to a bank of local phrases and vocabulary which were unique to North Antrim. It was fascinating for the children to explore this rich heritage and the individuality of our community and history.

‘A Carryin’ Stream’ with the BBC

Our school was recently involved in the BBC’s documentary “A Carryin’ Stream”. The documentary showcases the work of local teacher, Master Russell and how he inspired his pupils in Tullygrawley school in the nineteen forties and fifties. The children were encouraged to use their local dialect to write poetry about the world around them. The pieces were accompanied by fine examples of art work and lino cuts. The programme was presented by Buick past pupil Alison Millar. The full documentary can be found on BBC iPlayer.

MUSIC

There has always been a strong tradition of music-making in Buick. In addition to classroom music, children from Primary 3 upwards are offered the opportunity to learn to play either a woodwind or a stringed instrument with weekly lessons from peripatetic music staff. As their confidence increases, children will use their new skills in the school orchestra which features regularly in school events throughout the year.

Our school choir is composed of pupils from Primaries 4 to 7. The choir performs at services and concerts and also competes in BBC Choir of the Year and local festival competitions. Recently, they shared the stage with Ballymena Male Voice Choir at our Winter Concert. At Christmas, they regularly perform on Radio Cracker and in our community nursing homes and shopping centres.

All children are encouraged to work towards music exams and they receive extra tuition in school in preparation for these. Instrumentalists also compete at Ballymena Festival where children achieve many awards, including winning a bursary and the title of Ballymena Festival Young Musician of the Year.

SPORTS

At Buick Memorial we have a range of sporting opportunities which includes football, rugby, hockey and netball. Over the years our school teams won the local primary schools’ tournaments and the Girls’ team qualified for the “Northern Ireland Futsal Finals”.

Our rugby team participates in the “Primary School Rugby Festival” held at the Kingspan Stadium each May.

The netball team meets on Tuesdays to train with Mrs Hunter. They play matches regularly and take part in the Primary Schools’ Netball League.
